This Fall...

I have officially been back in San Juan for four weeks today.  Man does time fly!  :)
Here's some of what's been going on this fall...

I spent 7 weeks back in Pennsylvania and Virginia.  Got excellent care from Dr. C and some cool folks in Roanoke.

Take 2 ;)
Ready to go
In fact I liked them SO much, that I ended up going back for a second surgery- ya know, just to see them again.  Well, maybe for more than just that...

Anyways, the added bonuses of my time in Roanoke are having some new titanium hardware (although disappointingly, I did NOT set off the metal detector at the airport-- however, as a consolation prize, traveling with a neck brace does get one some special treatment.)

and I now have two new awesome scars to show for it-- the comments I've received since being back have ranged from "You hardly even notice it" to "Ooooh, well, ummm, at least you're not dead?"  :)

my hair's growing back too :)

Continuing to hope that I am just a slow healer type - I've always been a little unique-- so maybe it's true in this case too??? Fingers crossed and prayers ascending...

While I was home, I got to finally meet my adorable new nephew, scoring some major snuggling time with him, and spend time with my Grammy (who just turned 90!).  It was so good to get to be with family and friends.

I could just eat him!
Full of spunk at 90. SO blessed to be her granddaughter

Getting back to the DR and more into my familiar routine has been great.  The warm weather is a definite plus too.  So good to reconnect with familiar faces.  and got to spend some time with the bosses while they were here too. :)
love these ladies

Nik and I have been hard at work on student letters, and updating photos and profiles for the Student Sponsorship Program.  That's for over 1000 students between our 6 schools.  In order to avoid pulling out our hair and sticking forks in our eyes, we fit in the fun where we can, and the end is in sight! But in all honesty, getting to hang out with the kids is just full of hilarity and one of my favorite parts of the year...

Ready to get started in Elias PiƱa

El Rosario on their way
Back in El Cercado! yay
Chino- our fearless photographer- haha

some students need a little extra love in getting ready...

I wasn't kidding about needing to fit in the fun
with my partner in crime

how can you NOT love this little guy???

We also celebrated Thanksgiving thanks to Dan & Kari and Dan's folks with some of our closest friends.  Very special.  So grateful.

The Global Leadership Summit came to San Juan for the first time ever.  So incredibly inspiring!  Amazingly grateful to have the opportunity to attend and spend time with local Christian leaders.

and I did a little decorating for Christmas in my sweet room #14. I love this time of year...

And now, I'm hoping to just take it easy today.  Chillin with the dogs- who I finally broke down and bathed because well they tend to just STINK.  You're welcome Dan, Kari, & Nicole- although I'm sure they will reek once again by the time you get back next week- in fact, they might already. ;)

Looking ahead

Saludos!

I can hardly believe that I have been living in the Dominican Republic for over 10 months now.  I remember the excitement and nervousness I experienced as I began the fundraising process to be able to move here to San Juan de la Maguana and begin work as a social worker within Solid Rock International’s Child Nutrition Program and as a Student Sponsorship Coordinator.  THANK YOU hardly seems sufficient in expressing my gratitude for all the support others have given me to make this experience possible.

I am thrilled to let you know that I have committed to extending my term here through at least November 2013.

It is difficult to put into words all that I love about my life here, but I am consistently brought back to the concept of “relationship.  The Dominican culture centers on the importance of relationships and community.  In really looking at and experiencing the value relationships with others and with creation, I also am viewing in new ways and growing in my relationship with Christ, which in turn opens me up to share more with others.

This past year has seen a remodeling of sorts within the Student Sponsorship Program.  I have immensely enjoyed working with my dear friend and co-coordinator, Nicole Eby, in updating student photos and ensuring communication between students and their sponsors.  One of the joys of this part of my role here is getting to visit the six schools with which we partner and spend time with the directors and staff.  Being able to share in their heart for ministering to students and their families through education, to provide encouragement and support to their visions is incredibly inspiring.  And there is no joy like that of sharing in the get-togethers between students and their sponsors. To see in live form the difference of student sponsorship gives- not only in providing the essential step-up that education provides, but how the relationship between a sponsor and a student’s family adds that personal affirmation for the student that “I am valuable. I am worthwhile.” What a difference that makes…

Within the Child Nutrition Program, we have been working to strengthen and organize the important medical care, milk & vitamin supplements, and health education that is offered.  In January, we held a first ever “fiesta” for program families in El Cercado.  It was a great event that included health talks, devotionals and music, and time for the families to connect and get to know one another over lunch.  Solid Rock just recently held its first annual “Rice & Beans Challenge” to raise awareness of the issue of malnutrition and as a kick-off for organizing a monthly pledge system to support the program.  I have enjoyed being able to support the efforts of the health promoter and clinic administrator in El Cercado, as well as Dr. Perdomo as he deals with the medical issues that arise.

My absolute favorite part of working with the CNP is getting to spend time with the families.  To hop on the back of the moto with Angel and head out to the mountain communities.  To play with the children and sit with the parents and grandparents as they share the realities of their lives.  Realities that involve lost crops due to drought, illnesses like diabetes that nearly rob a child of his life, domestic violence, and murder.  To be able to support families who are without formal support networks for their children with special needs.  To be humbled daily by the generosity and gratitude of spirit.  I can only pray that somehow my presence blesses them in even a fraction of the way that I am continually inspired and encouraged by them.

I have found community here in many forms and in many faces.  I appreciate having the flexibility to jump in to help with the medical and youth teams that come to serve, and to experience culture at such varying levels- to recognize and watch for God in the weaving together of all of these pieces.

So I look to this next year with Solid Rock, to continue to build upon the work that has been strengthened this past year within the programs.  To continue to look at strategies for sustainability.  To continue to pour into relationships- not just in the work context, but with my family and friends here as well.

My position continues to be Self-Funded, which means that I am again looking for financial support.  In fact, I am in dire need of finances to continue serving in this capacity.  While it is uncomfortable for me to ask for money, I believe that God is calling me to continue to share professionally and personally in this capacity.  I ask that you please consider joining in the exciting things that are occurring here through your financial support.

Donations can be made online through www.solidrockinternational.org and following the links to “Donate,” or just click here.  Checks can also be made payable to “Solid Rock International” memo line “Laura Demastus” and sent to PO Box 20867, Indianapolis, IN 46220.  All donations are Tax Deductible.

Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers.  Your encouragement truly does make a difference.  I hope that you are keeping up with my experiences through my blog.  After first accepting this position last summer I wrote these words which continue to resonate my feelings—“Feeling so HUMBLED that God has led me here, CONTENT to be a part of it all, and so EXCITED to see what’s in store.”

Thank you again for all of your support.

Gratefully,

Laura :)

Life lately...

Here's a glimpse in photos into some of what I've been up to this past month...

Visiting with the folks of the Child Nutrition Program in El Cercado...  and when we get the chance Angel, Yairis and I like to explore the plot of land behind the clinic and then eat the goodies we find...

I got to "hold down the fort" at the Guesthouse with the dogs while Nicole, Dan & Kari were away.  We had a couple storms during that time... grateful things went as smoothly as they did, but it was interesting for sure...

School has started, so that means gearing up for organizing the sponsored student rosters, preparing for letters and photos... Here's a couple shots from the first day at El Cercado.

I turned 34!  I LOVE birthdays- they're like you're own personal holiday and I believe in celebrating all that my years have taught me and look forward to what's in store.  God is good.

Dan and Kari surprised me with decorations and breakfast.  Calls from the states including the yearly recounting of my birth and singing by my mother.  :)  Got a pedicure with Kari.  Went to the pool with them and Wilmar (who brought me special birthday guayabas), and then we had dinner, a fogata, dominos, dancing, and hot chocolate in my favorite neighborhood.  What a day! :)

And then this past weekend, we went to visit our dear friend Emma who is in Jarabacoa with Youth with a Mission.  So great catching up with her and seeing more of the country.  It is BEAUTIFUL! and we had a blast exploring through the mountains and playing in waterfalls.

yes that's me... skipping... cuz I can :)

I'll be heading to the states soon for about a month for neck surgery.  Hoping to enjoy some recoup time with family and friends and will be eager to get back to the DR and jump back into things here.  I'm learning a lot these days about trust.  and I trust that I will keep learning more...

Catching Up

It has been way too long.  I apologize.  I will do my best to fill you in on these past two months- ooph that's a lot!  In other words- Go get your coffee. Sit back and relax. and Prepare to read a LONG post. :)

The end of June, I was excited to be able to share the Child Nutrition Program with a few folks in efforts to grow relationships and brainstorm for the program.  I had to laugh at myself as we bumped along in Morales' little car, scraping bottom at some of the bigger bumps in the mountain roads, and praying we'd get through the river okay.  I then remembered my manners and asked if my guests minded walking a bit to a couple homes because we wouldn't be able to reach them by car.  They graciously agreed.  Unfortunately (for them), my definition of "walking a bit" apparently has changed over the past 8 months because I had these poor people SWEATING, as we HIKED up a mountainside- oops! it was longer and steeper than I previously remembered.  Thank you Terry, Amanda, Elly and Dawson for being such good sports!

It wasn't this mountain in the distance, but it very well could've been. oops :)

I have hands-down the greatest host family in El Cercado, and I was honored to be able to share with them in the baptism of 1 year old Jose Alfredo.  I don't have the words to describe it.  God was so "there."  The message, the songs, the baptism ceremony, it was truly moving.  It was family and friends sharing in love.

I LOVE this shot. Jose Alfredo with his mother and godparents.

LOVE
The beginning of July brought a chance encounter with Julian.  For those of you who know some of our history, you will know how much this meant to me and to Nicole.  I have known Julian since 2005 on my first trip to the DR.  I have seen him struggle.  I have celebrated his perseverance always and steps to reach out to others and attempts to make good choices. I have loved him and will continue to through it all.  Running into Julian in Bastida on this particular day was a precious gift.  It came with us letting him have it for the junk he recently pulled, but with grace too as he was open and processing some of it.  He actually accepted encouragement and compliments (that's huge!).  Julian will most likely continue to struggle.  But that doesn't take away from the beauty of what was that day.  A reminder of hope and of redemption.

After taking a group to the capital, Nik and I were able to get away to Las Galeras in Samana for a few days.  It was breathtaking.  and a much needed time to process life.  To just be AWED by God's creativity in creation.  Having time to just "be" and to journal confirmed for me that despite the ups and downs, this is where I know God has called me to be.  I don't have the answers by any means for a lot of the why or how.  But I am so glad, so grateful to be living this life.

Playita

Good morning! :)

Playa Rincon
Nik and I at Las Galeras - YAY

On the way driving to the capital, we stopped to give a ride to a Haitian family who was walking along the highway carrying a young child who appeared to be ill.  As we continued on our way with the family in the back of the pick-up truck, I kept catching the mother's eye in the rearview mirror.  I don't know where they started walking from, but we drove them over 40 kilometers before they reached their destination and disappeared under the guardrail into the wilderness.  It was a moment that will stick with me.  A holy moment where I saw the face of Christ. where my heart was bursting with compassion and my thoughts full of prayer.  How we often only scratch the surface of truly knowing another's reality.

Towards the end of July, I got to spend time with a youth group that Cora and Tammy were leading.  They spent a few days in El Cercado in homestays helping with barrio clinics. They did dramas, and outreaches.  These young people were truly inspiring.  They truly wanted to learn and experience.  Share and love.  I loved getting to be with them, to share some of my life with them too.  One of the many highlights of the week for me was the Sponsored Student get-together on Thursday night.  This is always one of my favorite parts of helping to coordinate the school sponsorship program.  We invite the sponsored students and their families to meet their sponsors.  Well, this week a sibling group of 3 teenagers sponsored a first grader, and he, his parents and little brother came to the guesthouse.  It was fun to hang out with these two families as they got to know one another, and extra special to see the father nearly moved to tears as he talked about how incredibly inspiring to see these three young people commit to sponsor his child's education.  He commented about how different the world would be if we all learned early on these types of values and if we were all committed to loving and caring for one another.  and these three youth seemed to really take that in too.

Sponsors and Students getting to know one another
Other cool things that happened during June and July- having Emily, an awesome college student from North Carolina, spend two months working with us in the clinic in El Cercado.  Having Cora visit- I always appreciate being able to talk out Child Nutrition Program details with her in person and visit families.  Having Emma Wilde- one of the absolute coolest 18 year olds I know- spend a week with us before beginning her 5 month adventure with YWAM in Jarabacoa.  And I'm sure I'm forgetting things as well... maybe I shouldn't wait 2 months to blog, you say.  Point taken. :)

And now I've had a week back in El Cercado, reconnecting with my coworkers at the clinic, and the families in the nutrition program, and just being with my host family here.  This weekend has brought some really good conversations with my mom/friend/sister here- I'm not quite sure what to call her- Yudi fills many roles for many people. :)  She has encouraged me in ways that I will be eternally grateful for.  and it has been fun to keep learning how to cook, to wash my clothes by hand again (I don't lie- I actually enjoyed this yesterday-another keep your hands busy while your mind processes and prays time), to take Jose Alfredo to the park with my host brother who's in town for the weekend.  Sharing Santa Cena (Communion) in church this morning.

So in the midst of the difficulty that is present, I see the beauty too.  I cling to hope.  I give thanks for all supportive ears and encouraging voices.  I give thanks for random dance parties in the kitchen, for my friends' new baby, for dominos, and making juice.  I give thanks that He has given me life.  and more so this life.  and I PRAY. and I learn more about TRUSTING Him.

And just in case you'd like a glimpse into how Nicole and I roll on a roadtrip, here you go... Ridiculosity at its best :)
